Strains are injuries to muscles or tendons, while contusions are bruises caused by impact. Both can occur in accidents and may require medical treatment.
Yes, even minor injuries like strains and bruises can have legal value. It's important to consult a lawyer to understand your rights and potential compensation.
A hematoma is a severe bruise where blood pools under the skin. It often requires medical treatment and can be a significant injury in personal injury cases.
You know, every case has value. Sometimes I'll have people call me and say, hey Joel, I was involved in a car wreck, but I'm not hurt. I've got strains or bruises, but I'm not hurt. Well, strains and bruises in and of themselves have value in a car wreck case or a truck wreck case. Now, obviously there's differing degrees of strains and bruises. One of the more devastating or difficult bruises is what we call a hematoma. Hematoma is a very, very severe bruise. It is very deep. Typically we see blood pooling under the skin. We see these very frequently in seat belt injuries across the abdomen or across the shoulder. Expressly for ladies over the breast area, they'll typically have hematomas where we've got a rear end or frontal collision, and there's a lot of force pressing on the seat belt. For men and ladies both, it tends to be a little bit more here across the abdomen, but you can have these type of hematomas almost anywhere. I had a lady I represented several years ago who was in a side impact collision and she had a very, very severe hematoma on the outside of her leg, and a hematoma is a bruise, but it's a very severe bruise. She went through months of treatment for that hematoma. She had to have it drained several times before we can move forward with her case. But strains in and of itself, probably the most common strain we hear of is whiplash. That is a strain of the neck muscles, the neck tendons, the neck ligaments. Sometimes whiplash is easily treatable. It can be resolved with chiropractic care, can be resolved with physical therapy. But there are those folks who suffer extreme cases of whiplash that although whiplash cannot be resolved with surgery, it takes months and months of physical therapy. It takes injections. It takes all kinds of treatment to get those tendons, those muscles, those ligaments to relax and loosen so that the person can lead a normal life. So just because you may have strains and bruises doesn't mean that you don't have a case and it doesn't mean you can't get a recovery for those.
