Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune is the site of one of the worst water contamination cases in U.S. history.
Between 1953 and 1987, contaminated drinking water in the wells at Camp Lejeune put service members, their families, and civilians at risk for cancer and other serious illnesses.
The U.S. Government recently passed the Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022. This act allows veterans, their family members, and civilians who were exposed to the toxic drinking water at Camp Lejeune from 1953 to 1987 to seek compensation for the injuries and damages caused by their Camp Lejeune exposure. Marines, civil employees and their families are entitled to seek compensation under this Act.
The victims are people commissioned to work at the base who gave themselves to serve their country, their families who believed they were safe within the military installation, and countless other unsuspecting personnel who worked in and around the base that were exposed. Though there are thousands of reported cases, the total effects of the contamination and the range to which it spread are still an ongoing investigation.
Though the pollution started at Camp Lejeune, most of those stationed at the marine corps base left over the 30-year contamination. These people are now fighting for their lives across the country. Despite the thousands of stories told by victims of this tragedy, there are still thousands more unaccounted for in the United States.
You may qualify for settlement benefits if you or your loved one resided at Camp Lejeune (or one of its satellite installations) between 1953-1987, for more than 30 days and have one of the following diagnoses: Bladder cancer; Breast cancer; Esophageal cancer; Female infertility; Hepatic steatosis (fatty liver disease); Kidney cancer; Leukemia; Liver cancer; Lung cancer; Miscarriage; Multiple myeloma; Myelodysplastic syndromes; Neurobehavioral effects; Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma; Parkinson’s disease; Renal toxicity; Scleroderma; and other serious diseases.
Camp Lejeune Justice Act Claims Deadline Approaching
Camp Lejeune Justice Act is part of a larger bill: H.R. 3967 – Honoring out PACT act of 2022.
The Bill was signed into an Act of August 10, 2022. Which means you have two (2) years from enactment of Act (August 10, 2022) to file a claim. The deadline to file a claim is August 10, 2024.
A person must have been exposed to the contaminated water at Camp Lejeune from August 1, 1953 to December 31, 1987 for at least 30 days and the injury was caused by exposure to the contaminated water.
Death cases that would have been past the statute of limitations before this Act are now able to be filed.
Exposure to the contaminated water is required. This concern extends mainly to civilian contractors. Merely being present on the base will not be enough.
Some health problems are “Tier 1” and are presumed to have been caused by the contaminated water at Camp Lejeune. The conditions contained in Tier 1 include: Bladder Cancer, Breast Cancer, Esophageal Cancer, Kidney Cancer, Leukemia, Lung Cancer, Multiple Myeloma, Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Female Infertility, Hepatic Steatosis, Miscarriage, Myelodysplastic Syndromes, Neurobehavioral Effects, Parkinson’s Disease, Renal Toxicity, Scleroderma.
There are some “Tier 2” health problems that are included but those require more proof.
