I’ve spent my life preparing for trial work. From the start, I had parents who demanded nothing short of excellence. My father owned and operated a successful accounting practice, and my mother was responsible for training Alabama’s top nurses. They set a high bar, and I carried that discipline into my career as a trial lawyer.
I worked my way through law school at night while training under some excellent attorneys at Balch & Bingham in Birmingham. That gave me a foundation in serious casework before I ever passed the bar. By the time I returned home to Florence to work with John Higginbotham in 1988, I was already in the courtroom trying personal injury cases and putting doctors under oath.
Those early years taught me something invaluable: trial skills win cases. After a handful of early wins and losses, I committed myself to doing my best in front of a jury. I trained with the National Institute of Trial Advocacy and pushed even further, earning one of only forty seats offered each year out of over 5000 applicants at Gerry Spence’s Trial Lawyers College in Wyoming. A month of intensive training there changed everything. It turned me into the kind of lawyer who doesn’t just walk into a courtroom — I own it.
Since then, I’ve tried more than 100 jury trials and over 500 bench trials, with more than 2,600 cases filed in Alabama and numerous high-profile out-of-state cases. My results come from putting in the work others won’t: visiting clients in their homes, understanding their lives, and translating their struggles into stories a jury cannot ignore. That’s how you win verdicts, and that’s what I do.
